<description>Kudos to Michael Croland for this very thoughtful and eloquent discussion, which very clearly presents Jewish teachings on compassion to animals.

As president of Jewish Vegetarians of North America, I want to stress that the current mistreatment of animals results in major environmental threats including global warming and an epidemic of diseases in the Jewish and other communities, and that the production and consumption of meat and other animal products violate basic jewish mandates to preserve our health, treat animals with compassion, protect the environment, conserve natural resources, help hungry people and seek and pursue peace.
