Episode 37: “…a fundamental debacle…”

By Jasmin and Mariann — September 25, 2010

Welcome to the 37th podcast episode of Our Hen House, featuring VegNews’ publishers, Joe Connelly and Colleen Holland.

In today’s episode, we will give you the low-down on the joy of our new, one-of-a-kind, vegan-produced tote-bags; the horrors of the animal exploitation at the San Genarro Feast here in NYC; and the story of a little pigeon on Prince Street who tugged at Jasmin’s heartstrings and re-routed her afternoon.

VegNews Magazine

Joining us today are vegan power couple, Joe Connelly and Colleen Holland, publishers of the uber-popular VegNews Magazine. Colleen and Joe will talk to us all about the high points of the past 10 years — since VegNews’ conception — including favorite interviews, the changing face of the vegan food movement, and advice for young writers and future business owners who want to incorporate the animal rights message into their profession.

For our review section, we will be joined by actress and foodie blogger, Lynn Chen, of The Actor’s Diet, who will give us the non-vegan’s take on the greatest vegan cookies around.

All that, some vegan banter, and of course, tons of current events from the world of animal rights.

This week’s news item include:

  • “The Rise of the Power Vegan” from Men’s Journal (read a snippet)
  • “Clinton’s Weight Loss Secret: Plants” from CNN (watch the video)
  • “Prop B would curb puppy-mill cruelty” from Southeast Missourian (read the article)

“Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect humankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.” -Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Thank you for the podcast that included the interview with Colleen and Joseph from VegNews..... they are hosts on the Thailand trip I'm going on next year, so it was nice to hear them. Teva's are the best.... they are the best flip flops anywhere..... I've lost count of how many pairs I have (more than 5 for sure!) I've already found Brody's Bakery on facebook and plan to use that 15% off code very soon!
