Call for Papers: Discuss the Meaning of Meat in Germany

If you’re interested in the academic study of the relationship between animals and humans, put your thinking caps on for the Group for Society and Animals Studies’ 2012 conference in Hamburg, Germany, “Eating Meat: The Social Relationship of Humans and Animals and the Meaning of Meat.”
Inspired by the German publication of Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals (yet another reason why that book is a groundbreaking one, and important for vegans to check out), the conference aims to “analyze the topic of ‘meat’ in the context of its social and cultural importance and functions.” The tone of the conference seems to be very friendly to vegan perspectives; the Call for Papers cites the growing animal rights movement as part of a “shift in discourse” in recent years: “The myth of meat as a vital force is losing more and more importance and sometimes the living animals behind the product ‘meat’ become visible.”
You can contribute to dismantling the myth of meat by sending your abstracts (300-500 words) to info[at]gsa-hamburg.org by April 1, 2011. For more information, check out the Group for Society and Animals Studies.
