Calling All Bakers! Cupcake Activism with Our Hen House and Vegucated the Movie

The annual Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale is a tasty opportunity for activism and fundraising on the grassroots level. Though you would think a brownie would hold less information than a leaflet, sharing delicious vegan food is a remarkably effective way to spread compassion in a fun, non-threatening manner (well, except for the threat of a sugar high). In 2009, the Worldwide Vegan Bake sale was named the “Veg Event of the Year” by VegNews Magazine. In 2010, participants raised a delicious $40,000 for a variety of causes.

The PPK.com sure knows how to bake! Yum!

As you may have noticed, Our Hen House is teaming up with Vegucated the Movie this year to host its second annual bake sale as a part of the event. Last year, the bake sale Our Hen House held with Kind Green Planet was so successful, even CNN took notice. So we’ve got our work cut out for us to surpass that for this year. This year’s bake sale will be held on Wednesday, April 27 from 11am-4pm at Brooklyn Law School (huge thanks to Brooklyn Law School Student Animal Legal Defense Fund for hosting). All visitors must be on the Brooklyn Law School guard’s guest list. Email bakesale[at]ourhenhouse.org to RSVP.

But we’re not just telling you all this just so you can come out and buy our brownies (though that would be pretty fabulous — just send us your name so we can make sure you can get in). If this is going to be a successful event, we need you (yes, YOU!) to bake for us. We already have a few volunteers, but the more sugary (or sugar-free or gluten-free or raw) treats the better. Most of our customers will be students and faculty who may never have experienced the wonders of vegan baked goods, and we don’t want to run out! If you’d like to donate vegan baked goods to our event, please contact me at bakesale[at]ourhenhouse.org. Baked goods may be dropped off on the morning of April 27 at Brooklyn Law School, or the evening of April 26 in the East Village, Soho, Chelsea or at another location near the school in downtown Brooklyn.

If you don’t live in New York, but would still like to help us out, please consider making a donation to Our Hen House. Our Hen House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and all donations are tax-deductible (and greatly appreciated!). And be sure to check out Vegucated, our partners in sugary crime.
