Video: NYC Vegan Weekend On a Budget

By Jasmin Singer — June 01, 2011

We hens from Our Hen House live in NYC, and have for a clucking long time — certainly long enough to know where to get smashing deals on scrumptious vegan food, and find out the best way in at some rad cultural happenings around town. So when VegNews asked me to host and produce several upcoming videos for the fabulous VegNews TV, I knew that “NYC Vegan Weekend On a Budget” would have to be my
very first project. I’m elated to tell you that the video was published today, and that it features some of my favorite affordable restaurants and vegan eats (like the spectacular fast food joint, Foodswings), not to mention artsy-fartsy outings for the penny-pincher (MOMA is free on Friday nights, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden is free on Saturday mornings). And, as a bonus, watch for appearances by a few vegan all-stars who I ran into when I was making the video (like Eddie Garza from Mercy for Animals and Leanne Mai-Ly Hilgart of Vaute Couture). I hope you’ll watch this video, spread the word about it, and on your next trip to the Big Apple, use some of my tips! Obviously there are many different ways to have a NYC Vegan Weekend On a Budget — this video explores one possible itinerary. Warning: You will likely be ravenous after watching.

This is fantastic and makes me super jealous of your city!

Whenever we are in NY, we eat in vegan-only restaurants because, why not? Support the places that share your values! Even if you are on a budget, you can eat in Candle Cafe instead of Candle 79 pretty reasonably. Blossom Cafe on the UWS has a killer bacon cheeseburger w/fries for $13 I think. We don't venture to Bklyn as a rule, but V Spot was really good when we went, and they have good beer on tap and drink specials. For really cheap eats, there's always Loving Hut.

This is kind of nerdy, but last night I had a dream that I was planning a trip to NYC to eat my way through all the Vegan hot spots. How serendipitous that I should then find this video today! It must be a sign ; )
