Veganism is About More Than Food

The dietary focus of the media and many activists make it easy to forget that being vegan means more than not eating animals or animal products. For instance, coverage of Natalie Portman’s wedding by CNN and People Magazine focused on the food being vegan, but didn’t mention whether her dress was made of silk.

Veganism “is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence for life.” This definition, adopted by The Vegan Society in 1944, includes exploitation and cruelty outside of the food industry.

Therefore, vegans do not wear fur, leather, wool, or silk, and do not use nail polish or soap that contain animal byproducts (many brands offer vegan versions of these and other products). We may also boycott other industries by not attending circuses that feature animals, or choosing not to buy items that are tested on animals.

Discussions of veganism, however, tend to focus on food. When I tell salespeople in clothing stores, for instance, that I am vegan, they are usually familiar with the concept but associate it only with dietary restrictions, and don’t understand its relevance to their wares.

The low profile of the non-food related aspects of veganism may arise from the impression that eliminating animal-derived food seems so onerous to many non-vegans and vegans alike that it eclipses all the other lifestyle changes.

Why Food Gets the Spotlight

It is an understatement to say that people love to eat. Food is more than sustenance: it can be pleasure, comfort, memory, social lubricant, pastime, even addiction. Eliminating a food from one’s diet is considered a deprivation, a cause not only of inconvenience, but of crippling temptation. I’ve heard many non-vegans and former vegans say that they just couldn’t give up cheese, ice cream, chicken soup, etc. Those who can give up such pleasures, they tell me and themselves, must have super-human discipline.

This is an excuse often made by people who realize that factory farming is horrendously cruel, but who don’t want to stop eating animal products. If there were more emphasis on non-food aspects of veganism, some of these people might turn out to be willing to forego wool and switch household cleansers, even if they would not change their diets.

Some change is better than none. For instance, just one fur coat costs the lives of “fifty-five wild mink, thirty-five ranched mink, forty sables, eleven lynx, eighteen red foxes, eleven silver foxes, one hundred chinchillas, thirty rex rabbits, nine beavers, thirty muskrats, fifteen bobcats, twenty-five skunks, fourteen otters, one hundred twenty-five ermines, thirty possums, one hundred squirrels, or twenty-seven raccoons.” Someone who decides to stop wearing fur makes a difference, even if she or he is not completely vegan (yet).

Food looms much larger in people’s lives than other products of animal suffering. We eat much more frequently than we buy clothes or shop for soap, creating many more opportunities each day to choose between enabling and boycotting cruelty – we make over 200 food decisions every day!

Another reason that people focus on the vegan diet is that the number of animals raised for food dwarfs the number exploited for every other purpose. Over ten billion land animals are killed for food every year in the United States alone. In comparison, fewer than one billion animals are killed in U.S. laboratories, and around 50 million are killed for fur worldwide. Food is simply the largest source of animal cruelty and exploitation, which naturally pushes it to the foreground of public discourse about veganism.

Narrow Focus on Food Undermines Other Aspects of Veganism

Two goals of veganism are stymied when food dominates the movement’s public image. One goal, to raise awareness of the various forms of animal exploitation, is thwarted when people don’t realize that there is cruelty worth boycotting in industries beyond agriculture. Factory farming may be the largest culprit, but entertainment, fashion, and other industries can be just as cruel to animals.

Another goal of veganism, to increase the number of people who boycott products derived from animal torture, may be shortchanged when people become interested in and start to experiment with plant-based diets, but don’t know about or haven’t heard enough about other types of exploitation to experiment with going vegan in other arenas. When I first tried going vegan, I started by putting soy milk in my morning cereal. I didn’t like it and gave up on veganism for a while. Had I realized that I could start by not buying animal fibers, I would have done that instead of throwing in the towel. (Eventually, of course, I found my way back and am now happily vegan.)

Six Steps You Can Take

So what can we do? Here are six ideas for spreading the message that refusing to participate in animal exploitation means more than changing our diets:

  1. Go into stores that sell clothing, shoes, handbags, etc., and ask if they have any vegan products. Be prepared to explain what that means. This lets businesspeople know that there is a demand for vegan items.
  2. If a friend compliments your boots or your scarf, mention that they are not made from leather or wool. If you can work it into conversation without sounding like a preacher, you can also explain why you don’t wear those materials. You could say something like “I love these because they are vegan. It’s like my diet – no animals suffered to make them.” If your friend asks, you then have an opportunity to explain how wool-producing sheep and animals used for leather are treated. Consider keeping some brochures on the subject handy.
  3. Give a boost to businesses that sell non-food vegan products. Talk up brands or stores with your friends, promote them on social media, and, of course, buy from them.
  4. Take pals shopping at vegan shoe stores and boutiques so they can see the variety and quality of goods available — if you are lucky enough to have such stores in your area.
  5. Give gift cards to vegan stores as presents so friends and family can try out vegan items for themselves.
  6. Recommend vegan books. One popular and accessible volume for women who want to eat more healthfully and/or lose weight is Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnounin; other possibilities include novels with vegan messages like Unsaid by Neil Abramson and Out of Breath by Blair Richmond.

Ironically, there may be an advantage to non-vegans’ misperception that our only restrictions are dietary: veganism may seem less extreme and more feasible when potential converts encounter it piecemeal. But that speculation hardly outweighs all the reasons to raise awareness of the cruelty so many industries inflict on non-human animals.

    Awesome article. I have been focusing more on clothing and cosmetics in my animal rights activism because while the food coverage in the AR community is terrific, there needs to be just as much a focus on other forms of cruelty as well.

    Interesting idea of deprivation - I found/still find it much harder to live without wooly jumpers and cashmere socks, particularly in winter, than I ever have cheese! It's also worth noting that some of the animal derived materials/ingredients, because they are by-products, are seen by non-vegans as harmless, not really comprehending that demand for by-products is also support for the meat industry.

    I enjoyed reading this article - keeps me on the straighten arrow (as best as I can). I wonder though, where the line is drawn? For example, Any of us who drives a care is not a perfect vegan - we kill countless insects - even riding a bike or walking has a detrimental effect on the animal kingdom. Raising vegetables kills insects... Last year I got a job painting houses - it was hard work - lots of ladder work. My feet were in trouble cuz I was wearing non-animal shoes - think they were some kind of synthetic - but had no stability. It got to the point where I could barely walk. I won't buy shoes on line - I really need to try them on - but there are no local vegan choices. Thus I bought leather work boots - just had to in order to keep working. Does that make me not a vegan? Cuz if that's true, then just about everyone I know who thinks they are vegan are not. So - just where do we draw the line???

    This is a really great article! I really love that it covers the whole range of reasons behind veganism and a vegan lifestyle. Often times the focus is completely on food and it's nice to see others bringing awareness to a vegan lifestyle. :) PS - Thanks for the link to one of my blog posts!     I appreciate that you encourage people. I am very tired of the "all or nothing" approach. My husband and I went vegan, literally overnight (well, he ate seafood for a month), 17 years ago. I was so impressed that he did so, especially since he had hunted all his life. We've worked hard at staying as true to our beliefs as possible but made it clear at the start, that if there was no vegan alternative, we would probably have to use the non-vegan product. This happened last summer when we got a motorcycle again after decades without. Although we were able to remain vegan with protective clothing, there simply is no protective motorcycle boot available that is vegan. The only motorcycle, vegan boot we found (and believe me-- I looked all over the net, asked at forums, etc) said specifically that it was not protective. So my husband bought his with as little leather as possible. I haven't bought mine yet and if anyone knows about one, and like Ken's work boots, it has to be supportive and protective, I'd love to know about it. The fundamentalist vegans chastise such choices, but I suspect they also don't ride motorcycles or don't care about their safety. We do what we can. Considering that my husband has multiple food allergies and has gone through stage 2 colon cancer recently (yes, vegans do get it), I'm so proud of him that he's maintained what he has.
