Episode 208: “The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.”

By Jasmin and Mariann — January 04, 2014

Welcome to the 208th episode of Our Hen House, featuring Dr. Aysha Akhtar [transcript], with a special review by Danielle Legg, and a brand new theme song by Michael Harren

In today’s episode, we discuss our new theme song, Fun Home the Musicalvegan dim sum on Christmas, and whether there’s a difference between animal rights and veganism. We’ll also squawk about the ridiculous craze of grain brain and wheat belly, whether it’s effective advocacy to comment on industry blogs, and the power of feeding the hungry vegan food. Plus, in our Rising Anxieties segment, we’ll chat about fox hunting; the recent brouhaha about the wolf and coyote derby in Idaho; butchers stealing vegans’ jokes; and one guy who is thinking all of this through out loud.

Joining us today is Dr. Aysha Akhtar, a brilliant neurologist with an expertise in public health, who will talk to us about the public health implications of our mistreatment of animals.

For our review, Our Hen House’s Outreach Manager, Danielle Legg, will let us in on some absolute must-have vegan products from Lush, which will leave you feeling fresh-faced and ethical, all at the same time.

Howdy there! On the "consensus on what kind of food people should be eating" & "people can trot out scientific studies to support almost anything" this is a topic of critical thinking and important I think particularly for people who are vegan to understand. When it comes topics of scientific inquiry the best source is the current scientific consensus. For that we can look to credible institutions who make recommendations and in this case that would be the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. One could also took to a scientifically qualified expert (like Ginny Messina, RD) to help navigate issues in particular along the consensus. We at VeganChicago support our vegan membership by supplying tools of critical thinking so they can defend themselves against diet fads like "paleo" or grain-free who might otherwise pull them away from veganism. We made a flier called the "Baloney Detection Guide" to help in this endeavor and you can find that here FYI: http://baloneydetection.veganchicago.com/ Great podcast, thanks! :DaveDandelion

I know I say this all the time, but only because it's true......what a great podcast episode! I enjoyed it and learned so much. Dr. Akhtar was very informative and educational, and I've put her book on my wish list. And, Danielle's review was awesome!! I loved it. It was my intro. to Lush, and I'm so happy to know about them now. I created an account, and added just about everything that Danielle reviewed to my wish list. I feel inspired to have an actual skin care regimen. More reviews/visits from Danielle, please!! :) And, the new theme song is so cool! Love it!
