Episode 228: “The world is a dangerous place to live — not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

By Jasmin and Mariann — May 24, 2014

podcastWelcome to the 228th episode of Our Hen House, featuring Ellen Jaffe Jones [transcript], with a special review by Ethan Ciment and Michael Suchman On today’s episode — and, warning, we’re downright loopy today — we squawk about oppressive shirt messages that suck; what our Brooklyn neighborhood is doing that yours probably isn’t; a little friend in trouble we met in our backyard; and why life is a Cabaret. There’s plenty of “Rising Anxieties” to report today, too. Joining us is Ellen Jaffe Jones, a former TV journalist and current-day vegan author and runner who is changing people’s perceptions about everything from the Paleo Diet, to the cost of veganism. Then, joining us are the guys from Vegan Mos — Ethan Ciment and Michael Suchman — who will be reviewing Brendan Brazier’s new cookbook, Thrive Foods: 200 Plant-based Recipes for Peak Health. All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights. You can listen to our podcast directly on our website (beneath this paragraph!) or you can listen and subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher! Also, if you like what you hear, please rate it on iTunes and Stitcher, and don’t forget to leave us a friendly comment! Of course, we would be thrilled if you would also consider making a donation, or becoming a member of our flock (especially if you’re a regular listener). Any amount is hugely appreciated and Our Hen House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so it’s tax-deductible! You can also dedicate a podcast episode! Don’t forget – we’re reader and listener supported. Plus, we offer some fantastic thank you gifts for your donations. Lastly, we are excited to be able to offer you written transcriptions of our podcast interviews (beginning with Episode 188). Thank you for helping us create quality content, and for helping us bring you a new podcast episode each week! The Our Hen House theme song is written and sung by the incredible Michael Harren. “The world is a dangerous place to live — not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” -Albert Einstein

What a great episode! (As usual) I was a little nervous about the title Paleo Vegan but really liked the author's approach to take the word Paleo and kind of swallow it up into veganism. Very refreshing! It's now on my books to check out next list, for sure. Have either of you read Paleofantasy by Marlene Zuk? If not, I highly recommend it. Every page is riveting and fascinating. Zuk is an anthropologist. Probably not vegan but who knows. It's clear that she believes personal opinions and feelings about food have no place in scientific research. But definitely worth reading from a vegan perspective! Lots and lots of facts to refute the marketing driven Paleo craze.
