Episode 6: “… teach children respect for life.”

By Jasmin and Mariann — February 20, 2010

Welcome to the sixth podcast episode of Our Hen House!

In today’s episode, we will discuss Ellen DeGeneres’ role in Jasmin’s nightlife, which, oddly enough, will lead us into a discussion of children’s TV. (Should you call it children’s TV when you’re an adult and you watch it?) Continuing with our childlike theme, we will talk with children’s book author and animal advocate, Maya Gottfried, about her new book, Our Farm, which is a collection of poems (and paintings!) for children – all from the animals’ perspective. Following that, we will discuss some news for animals from West Hollywood, as well as an incredibly provocative New York Times Op-Ed piece — “End Animal Pain on Factory Farms.” Then, we’ll let you in on some upcoming events that are not to be missed. Finally, we will give you our take on the best vegan cities – as least of the ones we’ve been to – in our humble opinions.

You can listen to our podcast directly on our blog (below!), or you can subscribe on iTunes.

I'm just catching up on some of your older episodes again and I was pretty surprised to hear that your favourite vegan city is Vancouver! (where I live!) I guess we take it for granted here that there are veggie hot dogs at the all hot dog stands in Vancouver. They really come in handy when you're downtown, because there is little much else (vegan) to eat there when you're in the main shopping area (Granville/Robson). Dharma Kitchen is one of my favourite places - it is close to where I live but I don't go there often enough. Everyone says the Naam is overrated, but yes, it is open 24 hours a day and they also serve Daiya cheese now. My favourite new vegan place (and the newest vegan restaurant in Vancouver) is The Loving Hut. You have to check it out the next time you are here! I've been there twice already this week. I can't get enough of it. Vegan Daiya cheese pizza!!! and more!! Their nachos, Nature's Wrap, Caesar salad and wonton soup are also my favourites there. It's always so hard to choose what you're going to eat when you go there. And they will start serving vegan poutine very soon as well!

Hi Alison,That's so great that you're catching up on our shows. Thank you! :-) Yeah -- Vancouver is pretty rad. We have a Loving Hut here in NYC and it's really good. We were even at one in Johannesburg last year! Gotta love them.Yes, I hope to make it back to your city sometime!! xo jasmin
