Episode 201: Grandma

By Jasmin Singer — November 16, 2013

As some of you may know, my beloved grandma, who has appeared many times on the Our Hen House podcast, passed away this past week. I’m sure you can imagine what a hard time this has been, especially as Mariann and I, along with my mother and step-father, sat vigil by her side for the 8 days leading up to her death. As a result, we were not able to produce a regular Our Hen House podcast episode this week. Instead, we decided to produce a tribute episode to Grandma, including all of her interviews from our show; an audio recording (by me) of the article Grandma wrote, not even a year ago, for the Our Hen House online magazine, entitled, “Never Too Late to Change the World: Why I Became a Vegetarian at Age 86“; an interview I did with Grandma in 2009, for Storycorps, where she shared her incredible life story; and a recording of Grandma singing her rendition of “My Way.” I hope that you listen, as Sherrey Glickman was an exceptional woman. She will be sorely missed. Her memory will live on, as will her legacy.

As always, you can listen to the Our Hen House podcast right here on our online magazine, as well as through iTunes and through Stitcher.

I remember well your "Never Too Late to Change the World" article and the wonderful introduction it provided to your remarkable grandmother! What a vibrant, interesting, beautiful and delightful woman - how lucky you were to have her in your life, and how generous of you to share her with us. My heartfelt condolences on your loss of her in the physical world - may her indomitable energy, inspiration and sweet memories continue to give you love and comfort.

Thank you so much for your loving thoughts, everyone. It really means the world to me. I know that Grandma was very, very happy by everyone's support of her after she wrote her article for OHH, and after her appearances on the podcast. Thank you for being part of our extended family. <3

Dear Jasmin ~ i remember your grandma from the time she spoke at the Moo Shoes event that you and Marianne hosted. She seemed courageous and lovely. What she said was inspirational and encouraged me to continue reaching out to elders. I'm glad you received this type of grandmother-ing. I'm sorry for y/our loss and offer sincere and heartfelt condolences. Hugs and healing and love from all of ROAR!

Jasmin, Condolences to you and your family on the passing of your grandmother. I very much appreciated the tribute show. Many of the things said by your grandmother reminded me of my own grandmother (deceased for nearly thirty years now) and my own mother who is thankfully still alive. Both lived through the Depression in Buffalo, NY and had many similar experiences. -Jonathan
