Flock Doc: “They’re animals. Don’t eat them. What are you, crazy?”

By Mariann Sullivan — June 20, 2014

The thing that’s so nice about writing to you, dear Flock, is that I can let my hair down, so to speak. I don’t have to message things as carefully as I do when addressing meat eaters and I’m hoping to sway them. I can relax. It can be so tiring some times having to worry all the time about your messaging. In fact, I’m starting to think that maybe I worry too much.

As you probably know, frequently Jasmin and I give talks at VegFests and Animal Rights events. We have a few different themes that we talk on — 10 Tips for Going Vegan, Activism101, Animal Law101, Writing for Animal Rights, etc. The audiences are usually great

We know that most of us were not born vegan and did not grow up with our current knowledge and feelings, but now that we're here it can be tough to not understand why everyone else isn't here too. Sometimes I provide a mirror (in as nice a tone as I can muster): "Why do you not eat x/y/z?" -- "Why do you?" The same goes for drinking and having kids -- things I also don't do that are considered "normal", average, and expected. Thank you for your rant. I need to read it as much as you need to share it.

One of my dreams is to make a faux PSA video with someone handing out vegan leaflets. On the cover, with a cute piglet or somesuch, the words, "How to go vegan!" On the inside, nothing, but in huge bold type, "STOP FUCKING EATING ANIMALS." That is all.

Love it! Well and to the point! What else do people really need to know or think about?

This is great, Mariann! Thank you, for sharing this with us. I feel exactly the same way. I do get tired of feeling like I have to coddle people, as if I have to make them feel comfortable, with their choices to do things, like eating animals, that I directly oppose. I'm getting it, that I do NOT have to coddle these people. They don't tiptoe around me, and why should I have to tiptoe around them. Sometimes I just want to totally vent to other like minded people, who would get what I'm saying. So, I really enjoyed reading this piece. It is nice to be amongst each other.....people who get it. Thank you! xxoo
