All Grad Students Who Care About Animals Need to Know About This Grant

This is a grant that becomes available each year and it is truly such an amazing opportunity that we try to let you know about it each time. Basically, it can provide you with money to let you pursue your education and do cutting edge work for animals at the same time.
Offered by the Animal Welfare Trust, the Student Internship Grant Program provides grants to grad students who “have a demonstrated interest in animal welfare” to fund either an independent project supervised by a faculty member, or for an unpaid position within an organization. Internships can be for a summer, semester, or year-long duration. The grants are generally in the amount of approximately $5000 and applications are due on March 1, 2014.
Though any subject areas are open for consideration, the Animal Welfare Trust is particularly interested in what we here at Our Hen Houseconsider the heart and soul of animal advocacy, farmed animals (including pro-vegan campaigns), and humane education.
This grant program has allowed students to make some astounding accomplishments that they would not otherwise have been able to achieve. Because of last year’s grants:

(1) a second year law student at Brooklyn Law School worked as a clerk for the Humane Society of the United States in the animal protection litigation department, (2) a first year law student at the University of Houston Law Center interned with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Animal Cruelty Section in Houston, Texas helping with cases involving the inhumane and unlawful treatment of domestic and farm animals, (3) a third year doctoral student in Sociology at the University of Calfornia, Irvine conducted research on the long-term effects of incremental animal protection policies on animals used in laboratories, (4) a PhD candidate in applied sociology at the University of Louisville collected data on Kentucky shelters to create a statewide database on the population of canines and felines held in publicly funded animal shelters.

If you’re in grad school, it’s time to get your application in. And if you know anyone who might be eligible, please pass it on.
