This is very exciting!
The very prestigious Equal Justice Works Fellowships Program is offering one of its amazing sponsored fellowship opportunities to someone who wants to work in animal law, which means that one very fortunate lawyer will get paid for two years to do cutting edge legal work to help animals.
The program provides financial and other forms of support to lawyers working on innovative legal projects. The two-year fellowships offer salary (up to $41,000 annually); loan repayment assistance; a national training and leadership development program; and other forms of support during the term of the fellowship.
The fellowship program is designed for lawyers who are working in conjunction with a not-for-profit organization anywhere in the US. The particular two year project can be initiated either by the candidate, who may approach a potential host organization with the idea, or with the not-for-profit host organization, which can recruit an applicant. The candidate and host organization then work together to design a new project. That project need not be focused on litigation, but it should focus on some sort of legal advocacy on behalf of “disenfranchised individuals, groups or issues not adequately represented in our legal system.”
The candidate must be an admitted attorney (not necessarily newly admitted) or a law student who will have graduated before the fellowship commences in September 2014. The host organization cannot be the candidate’s current employer, or a place where he or she has had a permanent position within the last year, though it is fine if it is a place where the candidate has done (or is currently doing) a summer internship or a work-study project.
All applications will be judged according to the quality of the proposed project, the host organization and the individual candidate. The interviews will be conducted nationwide throughout the fall and winter, and offers will be extended on a rolling basis.
This is such an amazing opportunity, and it’s really exciting to see Equal Justice Works obtain a sponsor who wishes to fund a fellowship in the area of animal law. Another sign that things truly are changing. The application deadline is September 17, 2013, 5 p.m. EDT.
