Joan Schaffner is one of the most tireless spokespersons for animals that I know. And I couldn’t be happier about that because now the rest of us get to take advantage of her hard work by reading her brand new book, An Introduction to Animals and the Law. As animal studies takes off as an academic field, textbooks that introduce the mind-boggling multiplicity of issues in an accessible way are going to be more and more necessary and, fortunately, this volume seems to fit the bill. Not only does it set forth what appears to be an incredibly comprehensive look at the current legal regime, it examines the philosophical underpinnings of our relationship with animals and suggests a way forward for the future.
I can’t wait to sit down and read this. It is going to be an amazing resource.
