This conference, which is to be held at Vassar College in February and is organized through the aegis of the Institute for Critical Animal Studies, is one you are not going to want to miss. And, if you get cracking, you might even have time to work up a presentation.
First of all, unlike most of the conferences we post about, the call for papers in this one is not focused solely on academics, though they are certainly more than welcome to submit proposals for presentations, as are activists. The primary focus here, however, is on hearing from students, both undergraduate and graduate, who are, after all, at the center of the up-and-coming generation that is going to change the world for animals. Presentations are flexible in format, and may take the form of panels, workshops, trainings, etc.
Among the topics that the conference will tackle regarding the oppression of non-human animals are the intersections between the domination of other animals and the domination of certain social groups, direct action strategies, and the application of theory to practice.
Excitingly, and in accord with the emphasis of Critical Animal Studies on activism, and its dedication to the abolition of animal exploitation and domination, the conference will launch Students for Critical Animal Studies — “a new group with the goal of organizing student activists committed to animal rights into a larger community with formal ties” — therefore aiming to strengthen bonds between student activists through social events and facilitated collaboration.”
The deadline for submissions is January 1.
