Day 2: Ashland, OR, and a Snowy California

Dear Flock,
Today was Day 2 of our cross-country drive to NYC. We somehow convinced our friends Beth and Debbie to make the trip with us from Portland to Ashland, which wound up being a hoot. Ashland is not only home to Ashland Creek Press, which is a book publisher focusing on animal rights themes, but we quickly learned that it has one of the best food co-ops we’ve ever seen. We drove from Ashland to Orland, CA, and, as you’ll see, wound up driving through a pretty nasty snowstorm! The food at Farwood Bar & Grill is incredible (they have a separate vegan menu).

Mariann and Rose at Lithia Park in Ashland

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Farm Sanctuary’s Orland shelter, where I haven’t been since #PRIVATE#I spoke at the Hoe Down there back in 2008 or 2009 (I can’t for the life of me remember which year it was). Mariann, who was on the board of Farm Sanctuary for several years, has actually never been to the Orland location — so we’re both looking forward to tomorrow
The weather has been horrific, and according to The Weather Channel, that won’t be changing anytime soon. Thank goodness we just replaced the tires on the Grandmamobile.
I’m insanely tired, but it’s a good tired. I love traveling more than I love anything. And it’s just magnificent to have Rose cuddled into a little ball (a friend of mine says she’s a “pit ball”), in the backseat of the car, this whole time.
Below is our video of Day 2!
