Podcast: Play in new window

493

Welcome to the 133rd episode of Our Hen House, featuring Rich Roll.
In today’s episode, we will give you our final glimpse into our Great American Road Trip that took us from New York City to Portland, picking up where we left off last week, with our tales from Hood River, Oregon, and the final leg of our journey to our new (temporary) home. While on the road this week, we visited the fascinating Tofurky factory, as well as the delicious Mother’s Marketplace and Organic Deli – both of which we’ll tell you all about. And of course, we’ll bring you our first impressions of Portland, Oregon, from a – yup! — insider’s perspective (!), including a look into our neighborhood of Sellwood, the nearby Wildlife Refuge that is Jasmin’s new stomping ground (or should we say, running ground), the Goodwill superstore that we have already adopted as our second home, a nut butter that changed the meaning of life for us, our favorite restaurants thus far, and a sneak peak at the various stereotypes about Portland that are, well, all true. We’ll also discuss what you do next, once you are in a place where there are vegan options everywhere.

Catch us on iTunes!

Joining us today is world-renowned vegan ultra-endurance athlete Rich Roll, also known as one of Men’s Fitness Magazine’s “25 Fittest Men in the World.” Rich, whose new memoir, Finding Ultra, details his plant-fueled feats of boundary-pushing athleticism, will talk to us all about finding his stride (quite literally) later in life, what foods and pastimes nourish him, what it was like to be one of the top people to complete the EPIC5, and a whole lot more. Don’t miss this inspiring interview with one of the world’s top athletes.
For our review, we’ll give you a tasteful glimpse into the world of Tofurky, which has long evolved past just the roast, and into the world of plant-based sausage, deli slices, tempeh, and other goodies.
All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights.
This week’s news items include:

  • “Retracting a Plug for Meatless Mondays” from The New York Times
  • “Heatwave kills more than 1,000 dairy calves” from Journal Sentinel Online
  • “Dead cattle, devastation in wake of Western fires” from San Francisco Chronicle
  • “More on Milk” from The New York Times
  • “Proposed Missouri Horse Slaughterhouse Mired In Lawsuits, Fraud Claims” from Huffington Post
