Podcast: Play in new window

Welcome to the 148th episode of Our Hen House, featuring philosopher Ramona Ilea.
In today’s episode, we discuss the election, and whether animals will be front and center in politics anytime soon. We’ll talk about why vegan foods are necessary to prepare for crisis. And, speaking of food, we’ll tell you about our favorite one-ingredient ice cream. We’ll lament about how we didn’t get any trick-or-treaters on Halloween; we’ll confess to you all about the children’s film we saw; and we’ll squawk about vegan crafting. We’ll chat about social networking and whether its impact in terms of social change is as big as we are sometimes led to believe; we’ll tell you about a vegan food truck in NYC that is helping some victims of Hurricane Sandy; and we’ll whine about the overabundance of oppression in TV commercials. Then, in a segment we like to call “The Professor and Mariann,” Mariann will get us up to speed on the happenings from her animal law classes, including updates on everything from the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, to Food Disparagement Laws, to issues involved in Legal Standing – as it relates to animals. We’ll also talk about Instagram, upcoming conferences, and pumpkins.
Joining us today is philosopher and ethicist Ramona Ilea, who will lead us through an accessible, entertaining, and thought-provoking lesson in Philosophy 101 as it pertains to animal rights. Be prepared to say “ah-ha!” more than once, and get your notepads ready – because you’ll want to take notes.
For our review, we’ll tell you all about the book, But You Kill Ants, by John Waddell, which provides straight-forward, logical answers to every question you can think of pertaining to animal rights and veganism – both the legitimate ones, and the eye-roll worthy.
All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights.
