Podcast: Play in new window

450

Welcome to the 153rd episode of Our Hen House, featuring Gena Hamshaw.
In today’s episode, we discuss our appearance on HuffPo Live with The Birds’ Tippi Hedren, where we discussed big cats. Today on the podcast we’ll also talk about big elephants, and the tweet that made us snappish with the Oregon Zoo. We’ll talk about zoos, as a matter of fact, and give you our unabashed thoughts on captive breeding. Closer to home, we’ll tell you about our dog Rose’s recent accomplishment (she has the certificate to prove it!).  And we’ll make a public apology to Norah Jones.
Our big news this week is that finally, at long last, Our Hen House expanded to become an online magazine! Though we’re sleep deprived this week in Our Hen House, we’ll tell you all about the amazing goodies we have launched with this new undertaking, including a look inside of my grandmother’s popular feature article, “Never Too Late to Change the World,” as well as the other features, columns, news, and bells and whistles that now make up the new, dynamic ourhenhouse.org. We’re excited to share all of this with you today.
Today is our last episode from Portland, Oregon, and we’ll share with you our Top 10 Portland experiences! You might be surprised – not to mention hungry, thirsty, and needing craft supplies – when we share our list.

‘Tis the season once again, and we’ll squawk about the holidays, including by sharing some thoughts about a very inspiring Christmas concert we went to last week. We’ll talk about Hanukah, too – don’t worry.
Joining us today is certified clinical nutritionist Gena Hamshaw, who blogs at the wildly popular Choosing Raw. Gena will tell us about a groundbreaking new study she is involved with that explores how a vegan diet can help people suffering from IBD – Inflammatory Bowel Disease. We’re so excited to see an issue like this finally being looked at through a vegan lens.
For our review, we’ll talk about a new video starring Steve-O, yes that Steve-O, from JackAss. This time, Steve-O’s explicit video involves speaking out for the animals. We’ll give you our takeaway from it, and also have an interesting chat about labels.
All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights.
This week’s news items include:

  • “Body slamming piglets to death humane, pork experts say” from The Vancouver Sun
  • “District Attorney Won’t Bring Charges in Butterball Video Case” from WITN.com
  • “Gov’t investigating Tnuva for animal abuse” from The Jerusalem Post
  • “Hen Rescuers Can Go After Farm Owners” from Courthouse News Service
  • “Backyard Butchers” from Animal Legal Defense Fund
  • “Costa Rica passes law banning hunting as a sport” from Yahoo! News

“We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The Our Hen House podcast is sponsored by The Seed: A Vegan Experience. The Seed brings you events, conferences, and happenings that raise awareness about the many delicious, cruelty-free alternatives to animal products.
