Podcast: Play in new window

meatonomicsWelcome to the 203rd episode of Our Hen House, featuring David Robinson Simon [transcript], with special guests Dr. Ethan Ciment and Michael Suchman.
In today’s episode, we squawk about making soy candles, the similarities between recycled paper and vegan cupcakes, the importance of scaling up, and ongoing prejudice against pit bulls. We also talk about the new documentary, Lion’s Ark, a film that manages to focus on 25 animals while also shedding light on the entire animal kingdom. In our “Rising Anxieties” segment, we’ll chat about a couple who made the unfortunate decision to write a children’s book about a pig who wants to be bacon, and we’ll share our reaction to a Dairy Farmer of Washington commercial that is just plain ludicrous – not to mention hilarious.
Joining us today on our podcast is David Robinson Simon, author of the new book, Meatonomics: The Bizarre Ecomonics of Meat and Dairy. David will talk to us about the skewed economics that prop up the meat industrial complex, from the costs that are passed on to consumers (and non-consumers) to the subsidies and all the other reasons that people pay far less for meat than it really costs. Be prepared to have your entire worldview expanded, and your life changed, after hearing what David has to say.
For our review, we’ll be joined by the fabulous duo, Dr. Ethan Ciment and Michael Suchman, of Vegan Mos, who are giving us a taste of Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s new book, Isa Does It.
All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights.
micYou can listen to our podcast directly on our website (beneath this paragraph!) or you can listen and subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher! Also, if you like what you hear, please rate it on iTunes, and don’t forget to leave us a friendly comment! Of course, we would be thrilled if you would also consider making a donation, or becoming a member of our flock (especially if you’re a regular listener). And here’s an extra, exciting incentive — ALL donations, including flock memberships, between now and December 31 will be matched by our Barnyard Benefactors! Any amount is hugely appreciated, and Our Hen House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so it’s tax-deductible! You can also dedicate a podcast episode! Don’t forget – we’re reader and listener supported. Plus, we offer some fantastic thank you gifts for your donations. Lastly, we are excited to be able to offer you written transcriptions of our podcast interviews (beginning with Episode 188). Thank you for helping us create quality content, and for helping us bring you a new podcast episode each week!
