This week, Mariann Sullivan talks with Garrett Broad about the challenges and opportunities related to diversity and inclusion in animal advocacy, how he balances his roles as a scholar and activist, and the results of a public opinion survey he recently conducted with the Nonhuman Rights Project about perceptions of legal rights for animals. Garrett Broad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University and the author of More Than Just Food: Food Justice and Community Change (University of California Press, 2016). His research investigates the role of storytelling and communication technology in promoting networked movements for social justice.
Then, Jasmin Singer is in Bozeman Montana to speak at the Unifying Social Justice event. She talks to one of the event’s organizers, Uma Graham about her work forming and running the Montana chapter of Thrive on Plants, why basing animal intelligence on human intelligence is flawed, and her advice for how to start vegan community-based programs.
Plus, we open the show with a very special song from Queen V, winner of the FxEctive Factor vegan talent contest at VegfestUK Brighton 2018, and Mariann covers this week’s News and Rising Anxieties!
