Welcome to the 52nd episode of Our Hen House, featuring Annie and Dan Shannon of The Betty Crocker Project.

In today’s episode, we will share our excitement about Our Hen House in the news. Plus, we’ll tell you about the glorious time we had while visiting a sanctuary in Vermont, just in time to bring in the New Year.

Joining us today are Annie and Dan Shannon, the power couple behind the Betty Crocker Project, which aims to veganize every recipe in the Betty Crocker Cookbook.

We’ll also share with you the results of our unofficial, unscientific Facebook survey which asked the question: What is your favorite animal-friendly message-wear slogan? And of course, we’ll give you our favorites, plus chat about some of the more controversial ones.

All that, vegan banter, and of course, current events from the world of animal rights.

This week’s news items include:

  • “Oslo Fashion Week Bans Fur” from The Huffington Post
  • “Cupcakes are Dead. Long Live the Pie!” from NPR
  • “For Arkansas Blackbirds, the New Year Never Came” from The New York Times
  • “Bumble Bees in U.S. Suffer Sharp Decline, Joining Countless Other Species Disappearing Worldwide” from The Huffington Post
  • “Vegan diets becoming more popular, more mainstream” from The Washington Post

Edgar Kupfer was a survivor of the Dachau death camp. After his liberation, he furtively scrawled the following message on the wall of a hospital barrack: “I refuse to eat animals because I cannot nourish myself by the sufferings and by the death of other creatures. I refuse to do so, because I suffered so painfully myself that I can feel the pain of others by recalling my own sufferings.”
