Social media presents all kind of opportunities, and sometimes it can make activism incredibly easy and armchair-based. As one example, activists in Miami concerned about the horrible conditions in their local shelter have targeted the mayor’s facebook page and have managed to make quite of stir. According to the Miami New Times,
In the last couple months, an unruly mob has found a home on the mayor’s official Facebook page, where they have clamored — in that grating and incessant way that only animal rights activists can — for a larger Animal Services budget, new facilities, and less or no euthanasia.
As always, if you are going to do it, do it right. As with any kind of activism, you need to pay attention to the impression you are making on readers and try to present your case in the most lucid, compelling way possible. And you need consistency, numbers and persistence to make any kind of impact. But once you have covered your bases, don’t worry about criticism or negative feedback (like that snarky “grating and incessant” comment). The animals need some squeaky wheels.
