I find it so annoying when “feminist” organizations throw events that serve animal products, especially dairy and eggs. I am equally delighted, however, when feminist groups make the connection and hold vegan events.
Given the fact that dairy and egg production truly epitomizes the exploitation of the reproductive cycles of female animals (not to mention the hideous treatment by those industries of the male “by-products” of that exploitation, specifically the discarded male chicks from the egg industry, and the iron-deficient veal calves from the dairy industry), it is a mystery to me why more feminist organizations don’t/won’t connect the dots. But the good news is that there’s a way in for us feminists. For those of us who care about women’s rights and animal rights, working with our community’s feminist groups to veganize their events can be a powerful (and attainable) action.
I was outright giddy to hear about an event being thrown by “Paradigm Shift: New York City’s Feminist Community,” where the food will be 100% plant-based, provided by the vegan catering company, Tastee Vegan. The fundraising event, “F-Word: Feminism, Funny & Fearless,” will take place on December 9, 2010 from 7:00-10:00 at Angels and Kings, the same bar that hosts NYC’s monthly “Vegan Drinks” extravaganza. For those who can swing it, Paradigm Shift seems like a great organization to support, and a truly feminist event to attend.
