Flock Bonus Content: Joni Marie Newman’s Recipe for Green Goddess Dressing!

In this week’s Flock bonus content, Jasmin Singer gets the amazing author, frequent OHH guest, and flock member Joni Marie Newman to share a recipe that she is very excited about right new, her recipe for Green Goddess Dressing as part of her work with the group Living Ubuntu. This very simple recipe is attached as a pdf to this email, so you can easily view it or print it out. Below, Joni has provided us with the fascinating history of this great dressing. Make it yourself at home, and then tell us on the Facebook Flock page about how it turned out!
Here’s the pdf of the recipe!

Green Goddess Dressing
The recipe for the entire bowl has lots of components, but I just want to really talk to you about the dressing…it tastes amazing on everything! Super fresh, herbaceous, creamy, savory, and just yum. It’s also simple and quick, but makes use of aquafaba as a base.

The history of this recipe and how it came to be:
I volunteer a lot of my time doing cooking demos (and feeding folks) for good causes! One of those causes is the nonprofit Living Ubuntu (Living Ubuntu is a non-profit organization with a focus on mind-body issues, specifically health and well-being, and the effects of stress, trauma and compassion fatigue. We seek to increase awareness of the global and local impact of these issues, build a sense of community, and encourage living a more fully embodied life.)

Barbara English, who is one of the co-founders, puts on events that are some of the most powerful events I’ve ever been a part of. With a true focus on intersectionality she has a series of events called “Connecting the Dots” in which she ties together environmental issues, racism, class issues, and, of course, veganism. There can be anywhere from 100-1000+ people in attendance, and I am tasked with teaching folks how to cook vegan food that is budget and environmentally friendly (with a focus on zero waste, sustainabilty, and decolonization) as well as prepare the food for the entire crowd to enjoy while watching the speaker presentations. I also need to keep the meals allergen friendly, which means gluten-, soy-, and nut-free! Quite the challenge! But, I love a challenge, and the meals I have provided for these events have always been a hit with attendees (including Gene Baur, who is also often a presenter at Barbara’s events.)

My goal is to prove that vegan food is just as tasty, if not even better tasting, than animal based foods, and it is filling, satisfying, and doesn’t leave the eater feeling like there is something “missing” from their meal.

At last year’s event, I served Green Goddess Bowls. Bitter greens massaged in this amazing dressing layered with coconut cilantro lime rice, roasted veggies, pickled onions, topped with even more dressing, and sprinkled with a seasoned seed and fruit mix. I provided all the recipes for each component, to show that each of them can (and should) be used independently in other dishes, or even on their own. But, the Goddess Dressing is the real star here.

Leave us your thoughts on this clip, and anything else you’d like to see as bonus content, on the Flock Facebook Page!

On behalf of all of us here at Our Hen House, thanks!
