One organization that knows how to mainstream the message is Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Even your Aunt Ida from Nowheresville, Nowhere knows the Sea Shepherd, thanks to their hit show on Animal Planet, Whale Wars.
Sea Shepherds’ mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. This group is not fooling around, either. Their campaigns against the exploitation of sea life has gotten them coverage in pretty much every mainstream media outlet out there. Check out their history page for some truly awesome back-story and list of accomplishments. With Captain Paul Watson heading up the effort, Sea Shepherd is up there with the most influential and eye-opening animal groups ever to exist.
If you’re in NYC, you’re in for a treat. Not only will the ship be docked in The Big Apple from April 23 to May 3 (they need volunteers!), but on Friday, April 30, Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd crew is hosting a not-to-missed fundraiser downtown, at the uber-cool Collective Hardware.
