Don’t you just love when people say, “Oh you’re vegan — you can’t eat chocolate …”
Actually, my middle name is Chocolate. And if I ever had a child, I would name it Chocolate. Or maybe not, because it wouldn’t live up to the name. That’s how much I love and appreciate chocolate, and all of the glorious feelings it encapsulates, and the cravings it sates. Yes, of course I can eat chocolate — just the pus-free variety. Me + Chocolate = 4Ever.
Lauren Krohn loves chocolate, too, so much so that she started a company called Sweet Compassion, which is a 100% vegan chocolate company. From the website:
Sweet Compassion was created out of Lauren’s commitment to animal rights, environmentalism, human rights, and a more humble pursuit of deliciousness. To this end she set out to create a sumptuous chocolate that people could feel truly good about from start to finish- from purchasing through a vegan artisan choclatier, to opening the adorable recycled package, to savoring the delicious fair trade vegan chocolate.
Here we have another example of a company that was started from the heart (and culinary skills) of an animal activist wanting to feed compassion. One possible suggestion for how to use these truffle wonders is as a party favor; that’s an ideal way of showing non-vegans how delicious kindness can taste.
Chocolate has been a big subject (and dessert) in the Singer Sullivan household as of late. Stay tuned for some other chocolatier activists who are busy fighting for animal rights one morsel at a time.
