Hen Press, a division of Our Hen House, is pleased to bring you another animal rights-related ebook. Our second publication is entitled Maureen and was written by Dr. Anat Pick, senior lecturer in film studies at Queen Mary, University of London in the UK.
In this semi-fictional piece, the author tells the story of her chance meeting with Maureen, a resident at a nursing home in a Tel Aviv suburb and one of countless elderly patients in their final months and weeks of life. The author reflects on the shared vulnerability of institutionalized humans and animals in a society intent on keeping both out of sight and out of mind.
Anat Pick’s other works include articles on animal ethics, animals in visual culture, and veganism, as well as the book: Creaturely Poetics: Animality and Vulnerability in Literature and Film (2011). She is also coeditor of Screening Nature: Cinema Beyond the Human (2013) and is currently working on a book on vegan cinema.
You can purchase and download the eBook Maureen on Amazon, iBooks, and Barnes & Noble. Our Hen House flock members will receive a free e-copy! Stay tuned for details (and join the flock if you’re not already a member).
Thought-provoking and inspiring, this new release from Hen Press has the power to transform our conceptions of those who are vulnerable in our society.
