We love you, our devoted supporters, so tremendously that we name household items after y’all. (You’re welcome.) But — much better than that — throughout the past few years we have been thrilled to offer you fabulous thank-you gifts in exchange for your generous donations. It’s like Christmas all the time here in Our Hen House. Our Hen House is, as you probably already know, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and we rely on our readers (you!) and listeners (you?) to continue to create multimedia resources to change the world for animals. We simply could not do what we do — produce a top-notch weekly podcast (which, eh-hem, is an Official Honoree of the coveted Webby Awards), and publish an online magazine with compelling new content every single day — without your support.
The reason we bring this up is because we’re all aflutter about our brand new incentive, which you’ll get when you become a member of the flock. While supplies last, if you become a recurring monthly donor at the level of $10 or more per month, or if you make a one-time donation of $100 or more, (which gets you a flock membership for a whole year) you will receive a copy of the award-winning documentary Vegucated, by Marisa Miller Wolfson, and a copy of Defiant Daughters: 21 Women on Art, Activism, Animals, and the Sexual Politics of Meat (the new anthology to which Jasmin is a contributor).
This film, and this book, are two absolute necessities for anyone who cares about animals. But becoming a member of the flock doesn’t just get you these new goodies. You will also gain access to exclusive flock member content — including discount codes, giveaways, tips and tricks from your favorite vegan authors and experts, contests, extended interviews and articles, and more. All of the content we produce on Our Hen House has one central theme and goal: to change the world for animals. Won’t you help us get there?
And, honestly, we couldn’t be happier about this truly fantastic giveaway. Vegucated, an award-winning film that is part sociological experiment and part adventure comedy, is the creation of filmmaker and activist Marisa Miller Wolfson (whom we interviewed back on Episode 80). It follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks:
Lured by tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover the hidden sides of animal agriculture that make them wonder whether solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough. This entertaining documentary showcases the rapid and at times comedic evolution of three people who discover they can change the world one bite at a time.
Defiant Daughters: 21 Women on Art, Activism, Animals, and the Sexual Politics of Meat [Lantern Books, 2013] is an anthology that pays tribute to the work of Carol J. Adams and her seminal book, The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory. Though The Sexual Politics of Meat was published more than two decades ago, as the 21 personal stories in Defiant Daughters perfectly illustrate, and as the publisher states, “the impact of this provocative text on women’s lives continues to this day, and is as diverse as it is revelatory.”
We have personal connections to both of these giveaways, too, which is partly why we’re so elated. Jasmin is a contributor to Defiant Daughters, and was the Creative Consultant on Vegucated, in which she also briefly appears. We know you’ll love this movie and this book as much as we do. Thank you so much for being so passionate about changing the world for animals. You inspire us.
