Peppermint Patties are among my favorite foods. The others include, in no particular order, kale, concord grapes, nooch, tahini, cocoa, and Walla Walla onions. Throw them all in a bowl together and I might pass out.
But Peppermint Patties hold a particularly special place for me because, unlike my other current-day faves, they bring back happy memories — as they probably do for you, too. Whether it was the Girl Scouts selling a cookie-type variation of them, or a special snack at the movies, or because it was the name of the most-likely-to-grow-up-to-be-a-lesbian character in Peanuts, when I was a kid, whenever I had the chance to bite into some minty chocolate goodness, life would improve markedly.
Now, I can have my Peppermint Patty and eat it too — and, happily, it’s not only vegan, and made with fairly-traded, slavery-free chocolate, but it’s being offered in exchange for a donation to Pigs Peace Sanctuary, by the creative and talented Katie Gillespie (of the Seattle-based vegan-themed blog, Serenity in the Storm). Katie — who is also a fab-o reviewer here at OHH — is helping Pigs Peace Sanctuary to raise funds by offering you a dozen Patties in exchange for each $50 donation you make (there are some other thank you trinkets too, for lower donation amounts).
Similar to last week’s OHH story about Sara Malazzo-Miller, the creator of the e-cookbook, Oh! Deer! Chocolates and Treats, which benefits a different wildlife rehabilitation facility each year (this year it’s Maryland’s Wildlife Rescue, Inc.‘s deer sterilization program), Katie is generously using her talent to raise funds and awareness for animals. And there is no better recipient than Pigs Peace, a sanctuary in Washington state focused on rescuing pigs and providing them a life of the dignity they so rightly deserve. Our paws are crossed for a visit to Pigs Peace Sanctuary in the fall. I might just move into the pig barn and never return (especially after learning about one of their recent rescues, Elsie).
If you have a talent — and it does not need to be food-related (though it is a no-brainer if it is) — howzabout using it to selflessly offer your product to raise funds for your favorite animal organization? For those of us who are too broke to make a monetary donations ourselves, offering a cookbook, candies, or candles in exchange for some funds to end animal cruelty not only feels good, but it’s a completely necessary ingredient in banding together as a community and helping out fellow advocates — not to mention animals! That’s also exactly what our wonderful volunteer artists do when they offer beautiful knitted wear and art on the Our Hen House Etsy Page.
Inspired? Me too. Hungry? Yeah, me too… I, for one, am craving some vegan Peppermint Patties.
