This Sunday, March 20, the “world’s largest grassroots diet education campaign” will spring into action. In case you didn’t catch my extremely subtle double-entendre, Sunday also marks the first day of Spring — and the official beginning of Meatout 2011.
Meatout, which is brought to us by FARM, has the audacious goal of exposing 20,000 newcomers to veganism. Through a series of events centering around vegan food — events that are organized by volunteers like ‘lil ol’ you and me — Meatout will reach the masses with the deliciousness of a compassionate diet.
Howzabout organizing a Meatout event? The suggestions on the Meatout page include everything from leafleting to classroom activities, and just about everything in between.
I’m a big fan of events, like this one, that consist of essentially individual projects brought together under the umbrella of a larger organized campaign. When I’ve taken part in similar projects, I have always felt absolutely gleeful knowing that all over the globe, like-minded folks were carrying on similar awareness-raising events, spreading veganism to folks hungry for knowledge and cupcakes (a winning combo).
In addition to Meatout, the Worlwide Vegan Bake Sale springs to mind, and that, of course, is just about upon us too. Oh, how ravenous I suddenly feel…
