In Saint Louis, a new exhibition has artists of all kinds — humans and, yes, non — practicing their brushstroke. The Urban Wanderers Art Exhibition, in partnership with Stray Rescue of St. Louis, is raising funds and enlightenment, not to mention compassion and consciousness, about the very serious issue of homeless dogs and cats. From now through September 16, art appreciators and animal advocates alike will want to make their way to the Saint Louis University Museum of Art , because, in addition to the paintings and photographs of regional and national artists participating in this creative fundraiser for Stray Rescue, according to the University, “shelter dogs will also create works of art using their paws, tails and noses.”
Beyond making me wonder if our rescued pit bull, Rose (pictured above), has any talent at watercolor (or papier-mâché?!), what I love the most about the Urban Wanderers exhibit is that all of the pieces are inspired by the recovery stories of the companion animals at Stray Rescue. What a beautifully interactive and innovative way to educate people about the plight of dogs and cats.
The gallery opening on August 3 was said to be among its most crowded events. (It didn’t say anywhere that the grub served that evening was vegan. I’m going to go with the unlikely but hopeful assumption that it was. If it wasn’t, well, there’s a sad irony for you.)
Excitingly, you do not need to be near Saint Louis to take part in the fun(draiser). With the virtual silent auction, you can bid on everything from “art by companion animals,” to sculpture, photography, paintings, and a very compelling section that is appropriately titled “Other” which features everything from a stunning handmade jewelry box (complete with pups’ photos and stories) to Stray Rescue Goalie Masks (oh yes).
