Why I Am Becoming More Conscious About the Media I Consume and Support (and What That Has to Do With Animal Rights)

Trust me, I understand how easy it is to expect media for free. I admit that I do it too sometimes, without always realizing it. There are times when I listen to a podcast or read an article online where there are “tip jars” or pleas for donations, and I somehow manage to skim over those parts. That’s why my own personal resolution for 2016 (in fact, I’m starting today…) is to be more conscious and supportive of the media I’m consuming. And, if you care about animal rights, I’m hoping you’ll do the same, beginning with supporting Our Hen House’s unique and community-building efforts to make media that changes the world for animals. In fact, and I don’t mean this lightly, we won’t be able to continue our work without you behind us.
If you feel you need us to continue to create consistent, quality indie media to change the world for animals, then we need you to make that happen. As a pretty fantastic bonus, all donations made between now and the end of the year are being doubled, thanks to a group of our donors known as our Barnyard Benefactors, so please consider OHH in your end-of-year giving. There are so many reasons to support Our Hen House right now, and as the year closes, I hope that you will join us on this thrilling, change-making journey. As we approach our 310th consecutive podcast episode for our signature weekly show, I sit in gratitude for all you have helped us to accomplish in the past year, including the emergence of two new podcasts: The Animal Law Podcast and the Teaching Jasmin How to Cook Vegan podcast. I am grateful, too, that you helped us to make our successful “Coming Out for Animals” video this year. Our online magazine has been going strong, producing some of the most eye-opening articles from some truly incredible movers and shakers from the world of animal rights. Mariann and I have traveled the country and beyond giving workshops on animal law, activism, and veganism. And as I am now just weeks away from the publication of my own memoir about food and activism, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to connect with so many of you during my book tour, and to thrust the mic in the faces of some awesome do-gooders and advocates who are as passionate as I am about changing the world for animals.
I know that there is nothing else out there like Our Hen House, and I think you know that too. But I’m not going to lie: This work is practically an around-the-clock endeavor, and we at OHH won’t stand for producing anything less than excellence.
