My new motto is: “Will write for tofu.” Do you like it? Good, but it’s mine.
My new direction – looking more diligently for freelance opportunities, and, of course, starting Our Hen House – led me to pick up a copy of 2010 Writer’s Market Deluxe (on Amazon for $31). This book contains info on every single trade publication out there, including newspapers as well as the glossies, plus a lot more helpful info for the freelancer or writer wannabe.
Maybe I shouldn’t say this, since I’d love to hoard any and all opportunities for myself, but in the interest of full disclosure – and of the greater good – here goes: If you’re at all interested in writing (either for pay or just for fun), why not start pitching mainstream publications with animal angles?
Pretty much every subject in the world can be brought back to animal rights. I talked about this in detail at the Let Live Animal Rights conference. So challenge yourself: Pitch a women’s magazine and talk about the reproductive rights of egg-laying hens and dairy cows. Or just talk about great women you know who work in the movement. Or pitch a foodie magazine and offer your expertise on vegan cuisine. The options are endless. (I’ll be talking more about some of those options in future posts.)
