Vegan media such as Our Hen House has become a staple for so many of you in terms of getting your news about the current state of animal rights, learning about various campaigns and change-making opportunities, and having direct access to literally thousands of people on the frontlines of change—from lawyers, to educators, to artists, to grassroots activists, to entrepreneurs, to food technologists, and so forth. Next month will mark Our Hen House’s ten-year anniversary. We’ve consistently brought you high-quality, thoughtful interviews and commentary from the world of animal rights for a decade, without ever missing an episode. These days, we product nine podcast episodes a month: four regular Our Hen House episodes, four flock-only bonus content segments, and one Animal Law Podcast. You also have access to media assets we have produced and created over the years, including the Our Hen House TV show, the Our Hen House ebooks, and the Our Hen House online magazine.
It’s Giving Tuesday and we hope very much that you will help us to start December off strong in our end-of-year fundraising efforts. We need to reach $15k in donations between now and the end of the year in order to receive our amazingly generous donation of $15k from our pooled amount created by our Barnyard Benefactors.
Here are 3 reasons to support vegan media today:
- We can vote with our dollars. Many of us already realize that in terms of what we eat—which is why many of us are vegan—but this extends far beyond just what is on our plates. The media we choose to consume is also a representation of our value system. So, to support nonprofit media efforts such as Our Hen House—with the collective goal of changing the world for animals—we know that we are doing our part to keep pro-animal, pro-vegan, community minded media on the air.
- We can continue to leverage the voices of those creating change for animals. Our Hen House is an oral history of the animal rights movement, and is an ongoing place for each of us to change the world for animals. We evolve as the movement does—bringing in new perspectives, opportunities, and activists who are creating change in their communities … but always with a vegan ethic as the through line of our work. Similar to a PBS model or an NPR model, Our Hen House is a nonprofit, so all of your donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. To support Our Hen House also means that you are allowing our content to remain free to those who cannot financially support our work. We have listeners all across the globe, which is due to your efforts and generosity. We are also always on the lookout for interviewing activists and change-makers who might not already be on our radar, and we welcome your input about who to feature. We have frequently pursued your suggestions, so thank you!
- We can work together to mainstream the movement to end the exploitation of animals. Our Hen House is a community—it is all of ours. We need you and you need us and we need each other. We feel lucky and emboldened to have created this beautiful platform for the past ten years, and we rely on our community to help it continue to sustain itself and grow. We are LGBTQ and women-led, and we work hard to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels safe, heard, and empowered. We bring you a consistent program with a variety of perspectives (some you will love, some you will not), and we encourage a dialogue around these guests and perspectives. We are all in this together.
We are so grateful to you for all you have done to help get us to this point. As we write this, we still need to raise $12,156 to make our match of $15k. That is a lot, but December is our highest fundraising month of the year, and we are asking you to please join forces with us and make any donation you are able to by visiting www.ourhenhouse.org/donate today.
We encourage you to become a flock member (which you can do for $100 or more), and if you are able to donate more (or to sponsor a flock membership for a friend of yours), please do! We are so very grateful to have an engaged, enthusiastic, and passionate community of listeners. Thank you for being such an integral part of our movement’s successes.
Sincerely,
Jasmin Singer & Mariann Sullivan
